The actress playing Clea, Charlize Theron, confirmed this in a social media post, giving fans a first look with the caption, “Meet Clea.” With a rich comic book history, Clea is a character that portends big things for the future of the MCU.
8 Clea is Dormammu’s niece
Clea is the daughter of Orini, son of the former ruler of the Dark Dimension, and Umar, Dormammu’s sister. Clea first encounters Doctor Strange when he travels to the Dark Dimension to stop Dormammu’s plan to take over Earth. Clea is fascinated with Strange and tries to persuade him not to fight her uncle, fearing that Strange will lose.
Dormammu imprisons Clea for helping Strange, intending to punish her after defeating the wizard. However, Strange and Dormammu team up to defeat The Mindless Ones after they escape. In Strange’s debt, Dormammu stops plans to invade Earth and frees Clea at Stephen’s request.
7 Doctor Strange trained her in the mystical arts
Dormammu has a clash with Eternity that leaves the Dark Dimension without a rule. Clea’s mother, Umar, is freed from exile to rule the Dark Dimension, but she proves to be just as ruthless as her brother. She throws her daughter into another dimension, hoping to catch Doctor Strange in a trap.
Strange rescues Clea and brings her to Earth with him, where he believes she will be safe from her cruel family and their politics. On Earth, she is helpless and homesick; Strange decides to train the Mystical Arts in her and makes her his official disciple, just as he was a disciple of the Ancient One.

When Clea is briefly introduced during the mid-credits scene of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, she creates a portal to the Dark Dimension with little to no effort. An impressive act, but fans of the strange doctor the comics already know how powerful and talented Clea is.
During her apprenticeship under Strange, she becomes highly skilled in the mystical arts, and when combined with her natural abilities, Clea is a force to be reckoned with. His Dark Dimension heritage grants him the ability to hover and fly and summon the Flame of Faltine at will; an act that Doctor Strange must use magic to ward off. Clea’s sorcery matches Strange’s in astral projection, energy shields, magical energy bolts, and spells. Clea is also a powerful telepath, with the ability to plant thoughts in the minds of others and communicate with Strange.
5 Sovereign of the Dark Dimension
Clea discovers that the people of her home dimension want her back and helps them dethrone the current ruler, her mother, Umar. With the help of Doctor Strange, Clea defeats her parents, Umar and Orini, and becomes the new ruler of the Dark Dimension. Due to her powerful abilities in the Mystical Arts, Clea also obtains the title of Sorceress Supreme of the Dark Dimension.
Personal affairs between Clea and Strange are complicated at the moment, however, she still asks him to stay and reign by her side – an offer he declines. Clea and Strange are soon reunited when Dormammu attempts to dethrone Clea to resume rule of the Dark Dimension.
4 The Power Couple: Clea and Doctor Strange
The hype surrounding Clea’s introduction to the MCU is easy to understand, given the vital role she plays in Stephen Strange’s life; she is not only a powerful ally but his wife. After a period of separation, Strange confesses his feelings to Clea, and the two celebrate a sort of wedding.
The couple cannot legally marry as Clea is a being from another dimension; instead, they exchange vows and unite their souls together. Their wedding rings are called the “two rings that are one” to symbolize their close bond. Eventually, the responsibilities of their domestic dimensions drive a wedge between them, leading to the end of their romantic relationship, choosing instead to remain soul-bound, but just friends.
3 Variants of Clea’s Multiverse
With the introduction of the Multiverse in Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, casual MCU fans are discovering something comic book fans have known for a while: the existence of Multiverse variants, of which Clea is no exception.
the 1602 The universe is set in the 17th century, where Clea is a powerful magician married to Stephen Strange. Stephen makes him swear not to get involved when he is captured by King James, allowing him to be executed, keeping his promise. However, in Earth X, she and Doctor Strange are lovers turned enemies, and a deadly fight between them ends with Strange dead and Clea as the new Sorcerer Supreme.
2 His lost memories
In strange doctor (2018) #17, Doctor Strange has no choice but to enlist the help of Marvel’s devil, Mephisto, in order to save the universe from Galactus. After Galactus is defeated and the universe returns to its previous state, Mephisto comes to collect the debt Strange owes him; the prize is Clea’s memories of Doctor Strange.
Rather than let Mephisto perform this, Strange performs the memory wipe on Clea himself. This painful act further crushes Strange when moments before he casts the spell, Clea expresses interest in giving their romantic relationship another chance. However, the memory wipe works and Clea forgets to know or like Doctor Strange.
1 Earth’s new Sorcerer Supreme, Clea Strange
The most recent strange doctor the comics have Clea now reigning as Earth’s Sorcerer Supreme. In the Death of Doctor Strange storyline, Strange is murdered; this breaks Mephisto’s agreement and Clea’s memories are restored. She is able to create a temporal remnant of Doctor Strange to help solve his murder.
Before Strange is swept away by death for good, he gives Clea the Eye of Agamotto, the Cloak of Levitation, and the title of Sorcerer Supreme. Clea takes up residence in the Sanctum Sanctorum as Earth’s new Sorcerer Supreme and begins to refer to herself as Clea Strange in memory of Stephen. In Odd #1, Clea, making her debut as the Sorcerer Supreme, attempts to find a way to bring Strange back from the dead while she defends Earth from mystical threats.
