The Lakes Comic Art Festival takes over Kendal this weekend
KENDAL will be taken over by a world of fantasy this weekend as the Lakes International Comic Arts Festival takes hold.
Comics fans, artists, writers and creators from around the world will gather in Kendal from October 15-17, 2021.
The festival program includes live cartoons, creative workshops, a comics market, debates, cartoonists, satire, exhibitions, exclusive signings and some of the most amazing comic artists from around the world. . The festival features a diverse and international lineup of guests from the UK, Europe, USA, Africa, China, Philippines and more. The majority of guests will join us in Kendal with some guests, due to travel restrictions, joining via live stream.
Festival director Julie Tait said, “We’re looking to attract ordinary people who don’t think they like comics.”
“It’s a bit like someone saying ‘I hate movies.’ You might not like horror movies, but I can guarantee there’s something for everyone.
“It brings people together to appreciate brilliant writing and brilliant art. It’s really approachable and tolerant.
“Major events are designed to be accessible to everyone.”
This year, the festival examines how comics can change the world by tackling some of the biggest issues of our time. The festival will showcase comics responding to climate change, the role of comics in improving education, how comics can be used to promote health messages, and the power of political cartooning.
Festival highlights this year include the Friday night opening gala, live from Kendal and New York. In conjunction with NCS Fest, there will be a balloon debate featuring eight guests, each playing the role of their chosen comic book character. At the end of the night, only one will survive, and it depends on how well they pitch to the public.
The comics market returns to Kendal with a range reflecting the wide range of mainstream and independent talent working in the comics medium across the UK. The Free Comic Clock Tower takes over Kendal Town Hall for the festival weekend.

Ms. Tait concluded: “A good start is to come to the festival, go to the town hall, take a look at everything that is available. Choose something and get addicted.
